It always makes me sad when certain characters on the show die or disappear because of the deaths of their voice actors. I just recently realized that Marcia Wallace, who voiced Bart's promiscuous teacher Edna Krabappel, passed away and that the character was more or less retired. I feel terrible about it, she'll definitely be missed. I was just a kid when Phil Hartman (the voice of sleazy lawyer Lionel Hutz and actor Troy McClure) was killed, but I remember that this was a very sad though unmentioned-on-screen point for the series. I'm glad that the episodes that featured these characters still exist for fans to watch. One thing I never entirely understood was the death of Maude, Flanders' wife. It seemed to serve not a lot of purpose in the show except to do a grief-themed episode. Who was Maude's voice actress? Did she decide she no longer wanted to be on the show so they wrote out her character, or did they just get rid of the character for no clear reason?

Yeah, Edna's death was made canon in the show as well. Maude was voiced by Maggie Roswell, who asked for a pay raise and FOX didn't give it to her, so she quit the show, thus leading to Maude being killed off. Roswell eventually came back, though.

Yeah I agree, Edna is definitely one of those characters that really made an impact in the show. I do feel Troy Mcclure and possibly Lionel Hutz were too (specially Troy) but for me cause I watch a lot of the earlier seasons it still feels like they are there kinda thing, so I don't miss them as such but I kinda do. It's hard to explain haha. I do feel grateful though that we had Edna as long as we did, I mean which season was it when Marcia passed away, so we've got a lot of Simpsons history with Edna for sure I also kinda like the fact they do retire the characters though as opposed to replacing them with a new actor. I think it's really nice and respectable to the voice actors and the characters too, as they wouldn't be the same with someone else I don't think. Specially if it was noticeable anyway

I've received some flak for this opinion, but if a voice actor died, I wouldn't really mind a replacement. It would definitely take some time to get used to, but I would like to continue having the characters around. It's true that the characters wouldn't be the same in some ways, but then again, they would still have the same personality. Still, the voice is such a big part of what makes the character unique, so a change might not be accepted by some people. Marcia Mitzman-Gaven replaced Roswell as Maude for a few episodes, and that was a pretty big change, but if she was around for a liitle longer, I think I could've gotten used to her. The same would likely go with any new voice actor. I can understand the whole respect angle, though.

Specially if it was noticeable anyway Edna still continues to appear in episodes, but she does not have a speaking role and she's a ghost who follows Ned Flanders along with Maude. I've only seen the ghost appearance a few times though, and only very briefly.

Yeah, it's same with the Tapped Out game. I don't think she's voiced in that also
